Copihue is a result of the combination of hundreds of thousands of miles ocean-going experience with the expertise of Andre Hoeks design office in Edam. When Andre was approached by the owner, it was to design an easily handled, attractive family sailing yacht for a family with a circumnavigation in mind. Aluminium was chosen as the hull material and a traditional aluminium, not carbon, mast was chosen for strength and durability. The traditional lines and long overhangs belie a modern underwater section, with a fin keel and torpedo bulb housing 14 tonnes of lead. Her modern, skeg hung rudder is immediately forward of a fully variable pitch four bladed propeller. An interior layout was chosen designed with family cruising in mind. The warm, open and spacious interior is a testament to the designers and to the skill of Claasen Jachtbouw of Zaandam, in Holland, who fitted out the interior. Six years after her launching, Copihue has safely completed five Atlantic crossings, a Pacific crossing and has cruised to very high latitudes, both North of the Arctic Circle and as far South as Cape Horn. Her performance has raised eyebrows and her stunning looks have turned heads wherever she has gone.
